چکیده

Detailed analysis of elastic light scattering by spheres in FlowCytometers shows unexpected Lorenz-Mie scattering patterns. The complete scattering matrix S of spheres was measured. Two parameter scatterplots with xand ycoordinates determined by the S11 + Sij and S11 Sij values were obtained. Samples of spheres with very narrow size distributions were analyzed and produced unexpected two parameter scatterplots. Instead of compact distributions we observed Lissajous-like loops. Simulation of the scatterplots, using Lorenz-Mie theory, shows that these loops are not due to experimental errors, but due to true Lorenz-Mie scattering. We show that the loops originate from the sensitivity of the scattered field on the radius of the spheres. This work demonstrates that the interpretation of rare events and hidden features in FlowCytometry needs reconsideration.

Another face of Lorenz-Mie scattering: monodisperse distributions of spheres produce Lissajous-like patterns.

The complete scattering matrix S of spheres was measured with a flow cytometer. The experimental equipment allows simultaneous detection of two scattering-matrix elements for every sphere in the distribution. Two-parameter scatterplots with x and y coordinates determined by the S(ll) + S(ij) and S(ll)-S(ij) values are measured. Samples of spheres with very narrow size distributions (< 1%) were ...

A Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...

In this paper, optical properties of Au–Ag spherical nanoalloy are investigated by means of Generalized Lorenz–Mie Theory (GLMT) when this nanoparticle is embedded into water. Scattering, extinction and absorption cross-sections of this nanoalloy into water are calculated by changes of incident wavelengths in visible and near infra-red region. Moreover, changes of height and wavelengths of exti...

Calculation of the Induced Charge Distribution on the Surface of a Metallic Nanoparticle Due to an Oscillating Dipole Using Discrete Dipole Approximation method

In this paper, the interaction between an oscillating dipole moment and a Silver nanoparticle has been studied. Our calculations are based on Mie scattering theory and discrete dipole approximation(DDA) method. At first, the resonance frequency due to excitingthe localized surface plasmons has been obtained using Mie scattering theory and then by exciting a dipole moment in theclose proximity of...

Effects of nonsphericity on the behavior of Lorenz–Mie resonances in scattering characteristics of liquid-cloud droplets

By using the results of highly accurate T-matrix computations for randomly oriented oblate and prolate spheroids and Chebyshev particles with varying degrees of asphericity, we analyze the effects of a deviation of water-droplet shapes from that of a perfect sphere on the behavior of Lorenz–Mie morphology-dependent resonances of various widths. We demonstrate that the positions and profiles of ...
